Vera Wang NYFW 2016

February 19, 2016

New York is full of surprises and if you had told me on Friday last when I landed in JFK from Mexico, that I would be given a press pass to Vera Wang, I wouldn’t have believed you. One of the main reasons I love being in this amazing city is you can make anything happen in a day. New York is an opportunity just waiting to happen. There is always a way in this city to grow and network. So this Tuesday, I had the honour of getting to see one of fashion weeks most elite and famous designers Vera Wang. This years collection was simply breathtaking, my favorite part was watching the full production of the show come to life. Models were walking onto the catwalk from every angle, it definitely achieved the element of surprise. With a selection of black gowns , olive greens suits and embellished nude dresses Vera Wang’s collection will be a hard one to out stage. Inspired by the 20’s and 30’s, Vera Wang wanted to convey a collection that represented strong and charismatic young women and she achieved this.

I will admit there was a beautiful tall gown that would be a hard one to carry off for most ladies. If I was to wear it, I think a pair of jeans and an undergarment would be necessary. But then again, fashion is a matter of opinion and that’s just mine. My favourite was a nude tall column gown with a bib neck that was embellished with numerous panels of crystals and metallic sequins. It was a very diverse collection, from bold black suits to dreamy gowns. Vera created a magical show that was strong from the start to finish. One thing that I really adored when looking through the endless racks of clothes, was how the collection was styled. Layering was a big factor and I loved it. Patchwork was also a strong element and was used beautifully in a variety of colours from soft greys, olives and chartreuse in numerous fur jackets. This experience was one to remember and I am just so happy I got to witness a true fashion legend behind the scenes. Thank you to my lovely and talented friend Annis, who gave me front row pictures from the press box. A rising New York photographer who has brains, talent and beauty. Son Jung Wan 2016 NYFW

February 15, 2016

There is a story behind every women and its never the same, you will never see recurring details and that’s actually what Son Jung Wan achieves in each and every collection she creates. Son Jung Wan’s career has blossomed from a modest boutique, into a household name making her one of the most elite designers in the game. There are so many designers that showcase each season at New York fashion week but there are very few that create the atmosphere and real anticipation that Ms.Wan does. Sophisticated but bold, this collection is not made for the practical lady who loves to blend in. Nothing in the Son Jung Wan’s collection will be missable due to its strong vibrant colors, selection of fine fabrics but most importantly for me the tailoring she creates. All of her creations are tailored for the women who loves to stand out for all the right reasons. This February her new collection was no different, with numerous furs and embellishments, as always I personally fell in love at first sight with her collection. Unlike last February where Ms. Wan used dark purples, green furs and glistening gold fabrics, this year she opted for pastel colours, with grey and black garments added into the mix. Fearless, bold and sophisticated, the Son Jung Wan collection takes risks to the next level. Unfortunately the finale was really quick, so I was unable to get pictures of some pieces but I hope you ladies love the shots I did get. I even got a quick snap of Kevin Tachmen, a fashion genius when it comes to photography working behind the scenes. I really could not pick a favorite and if I did it would be a three hour long essay discussing every small detail of this exquisite and charming collection.

Fashion Farm Foundation Sept 2015

September 18, 2015

“Fashion Farm Foundation” was a complete mystery to me, as I had never heard of it and for me it really was the perfect ending to a perfect fashion week, as there was an excitement and anticipation not really knowing what to expect. Following the creative work of four young Hong Kong designers, it was inevitable that this show would be at the very least interesting. Having worked last season with “Concept Korea” a collaboration of three designers from Korea, it is just amazing to see how three designers, could creatively pull three completely different collections into one show. It was a very intriguing show for one simple reason, there is no leader or head designer behind it so you are continuously left in your seat with the element of surprise, as really anything could come next.

With most designers, they tend to stick to the same confinements for each show where it can be a repetitive pattern or color and in ways creates a uniform look with a selection of options. With Fashion Farm Foundation the show was divided into four separate collections. The first was one of my favorites using a contrast of black and red accessories, with bold statement sunglasses, this was called Injury and it was a very unusual collection. Second up was Day Dream Nation which was perfectly named as it was so intriguing and out there. Day Dream Nation was a collection created solely around a wandering and creative mind, bringing to life a combination of fashion and daydreams. I have to say I understand and appreciate that not many would wear this on a daily basis but to see a collection that went against the illusion of practical fashion, made it all the more fun for me. For me it was creative, fun and regardless of it being out there had pieces within the collection that you would pull and make your own. Following Pursuit were the boys modeling Placed by Gideon, this was a lot more casual but still unique in its own right. My favorite was a white sweater combo with purple pants it is not your typical masculine look. Adding color you would think would make a man look feminine but there was not a hint of this, the boys rocked it. Last but not least was Methodology Collection, which I feel would be more suited to rockers of New York, it definitely had some quirky pieces, their embellished caps finished of the show and I would not be surprised to see it showcased on the streets of New York next week !!

Son Jung Wan Sept 2015

September 16, 2015

Some of you may not be familiar with Son Jung Wan however all will be forgiven in a moment and I have no doubt when you read this post and discover my previous post on her from last season, you will understand why this designer is absolutely adored my so many and idolized in the fashion industry. I will not lie to you but my knowledge of designers was very minimal until recent years. I am the type of girl who likes or dislikes what I see and will make up my own mind, I will not be influenced by branding or labels. It’s a part of the industry that bugs me a little because designers can get it wrong on occasions. Son Jung Wan will never be in that category for me and has become one of my most loved and widely anticipated designers every fashion week. Having become one of Korea’s most successful designers, she is always ahead of the game and produces the strongest collections each year. Fur was extremely popular last season and there were very few designers who did not attempt to incorporate it into their designs last February. However no one and I honestly mean it no one, embraced this trend to the same depth as Son did. Son used a selection of lavish orange and blue furs incorporated with shimmering gold fabric and knits. It was a big risk to take, as it could have easily bordered on gaudy or vulgar. She has a diverse and an exceptionally rare talent that is sometimes lacking in this industry and I truly feel that this is only the beginning of something great for her. The one think that is never lacking in Son Jung Wan’s collections is colour but mainly what you will continue to see is beautiful shimmering fabrics which grab every shimmer of light available. The luxurious collections designed by Son Jung Wan consist of impeccably executed separates and dresses made from the most sumptuous fabrics. Working behind this show is a dream, not only are you surrounded by an outstanding collection you are working beside an elite designer, who is at the top of her game and is beyond sweet and appreciative. With every show there usually will be three male models in the mix and I must say I would easily wear any of their pieces. Dresses were very big also this season and Rea modeled a beautiful dusted pink dress. Draped over to one side, it made the most elegant silhouette and Rea really rocked it for me. To choose a favorite was easy for me, embellishments and shimmering garments are Son Jung Wan’s staple in every collection but this particular dress I fell in love with straight away. The dress had shimmering bronze-rose fabric and was heavily beaded. There is no other way to say it, I was emotional when we had to leave, I just wanted this dress so bad, you know the feeling lol !!! You can see for yourself how amazing this collection is. I hope now when you see fashion shows, you will immediately look and recognize Son Jung Wan’s collection. Her designs for me personally stood out from other designers at fashion week.

Marissa Webb Sept 2015

September 14, 2015

mar mar 2 mar mar

Marissa Webb once again I feel has really nailed it. You may feel you don’t know or recognise her designs but I think it would be a good guess that you may have unknowingly worn some of them at some point. One of my favourite brands which I discovered after moving to New York was Jcrew, for many reasons I love them but particularly for their impressive range of accessories and costume jewellery. As Head of Accessories, to now Head of Women’s wear, Marissa has continued with her own collection, allowing women to create a style that is their own but which also is effortless and timeless. My favourite part of last season was the division Marissa had created, simply by using three base colours, which included pink, combat greens and blacks. Some may feel that a combination of the three could be confusing and out off place for one collection however using a variety of textures and tailoring, Marissa really has created something special. This was my second show working along side Lynne O’Neill’s production team and I was really curious to see if Marissa would do the same this season. To my surprise and delight, I found this year to be all the more exciting and truth be told she has completely blown last seasons collection out of the water. This was easily my favourite designer so far at New York Fashion Week, Marissa really has pushed herself and once again created a beautiful collection. With this year’s collection, I found it to be a lot more vibrant with added yellows and purples in the mix, I just wanted it all !!! Last season, Marissa created a beautiful dusted baby pink suit which was redesigned and recoloured, this made lovers of her designs very happy. Instead of pink however this time, she opted for a beautiful and unique pale purple which opened the show perfectly.

There really is an indescribable excitement and buzz working behind the scene, catching every moment leading up to the big reveal. You can sense the excitement and nerves of the designers themselves with everyone waiting in anticipation. We are just there for a short moment, to observe months of hard work that can either be loved or rejected within minutes. It has to be an intense feeling for any designer, with some stressful moments especially making sure the show goes off smoothly. I hope if you haven’t heard of Marissa Webb before this, you will now take note of this incredible designer.
