Naeem Khan NYFW 2016

February 19, 2016

When we were much younger, we all envisaged ourselves whilst reading fairytales to be a princess, wearing beautiful silk dresses that were endlessly beaded. Naeem Khan an American designer has created this picture however today our fairytale princesses now include Beyonce, Diana Kruger, Carrie Underwood and the First Lady Michelle Obama. It was complete chaos behind the scenes, not only were there over twenty models, the dresses commanded a lot of space, making it a room that is really hard to describe other than pure magical. How production lined up the girls in between eager photographers while still keeping the run of show, seem to be an impossible task but they did it so gracefully. Since 2003 Naeem Khan has created some of the most delicate and intricate embroidery designs and by adding his own signature, Mr. Khan conveys elements of his Indian heritage.

For this particular show, Mr. Khan showcased how talented and diverse he can be as a designer.  With a selection of velvet gowns and vests, Khan used geometric shapes and floral patterns that were far from his usually predictable display of beading. Mixing colors from Violet, black, blue and pink velvets with a small presence of embellishing, it was the perfect opening unlike anything I had seen all week. Front of house before the opening was layered with daring red theatrical curtains and oversized tassels. While everyone was finding their seats the once vibrant red curtains soon turn to grey, layers upon layers were drawn back and Khan was ready to put on a show. Tulle dresses were also present but of course not without Khan signature shimmer. Two in particular stood out for me, the first was a black-layered tall dress with a gold bodice. The other was a bright red layered tulle dress however with this dress, the bodice was laced and delicately beaded onto sheer fabric. Many at the show were from the film and fashion industries and there was also this year’s newly crowned Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach. However for me the star of the show was 11-year-old Trinity Faith Moran, who sadly suffers from rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Trinity walked hand in hand with Mr. Khan, as they walked through the finale with over twenty models. Trinity’s dream was to walk the runway and she did so, effortlessly wearing her custom designed red dress made especially for this big occasion. It truly was a show not to miss but young Trinity stole the show with her infectious smile and elegant walk.

Vera Wang NYFW 2016

February 19, 2016

New York is full of surprises and if you had told me on Friday last when I landed in JFK from Mexico, that I would be given a press pass to Vera Wang, I wouldn’t have believed you. One of the main reasons I love being in this amazing city is you can make anything happen in a day. New York is an opportunity just waiting to happen. There is always a way in this city to grow and network. So this Tuesday, I had the honour of getting to see one of fashion weeks most elite and famous designers Vera Wang. This years collection was simply breathtaking, my favorite part was watching the full production of the show come to life. Models were walking onto the catwalk from every angle, it definitely achieved the element of surprise. With a selection of black gowns , olive greens suits and embellished nude dresses Vera Wang’s collection will be a hard one to out stage. Inspired by the 20’s and 30’s, Vera Wang wanted to convey a collection that represented strong and charismatic young women and she achieved this.

I will admit there was a beautiful tall gown that would be a hard one to carry off for most ladies. If I was to wear it, I think a pair of jeans and an undergarment would be necessary. But then again, fashion is a matter of opinion and that’s just mine. My favourite was a nude tall column gown with a bib neck that was embellished with numerous panels of crystals and metallic sequins. It was a very diverse collection, from bold black suits to dreamy gowns. Vera created a magical show that was strong from the start to finish. One thing that I really adored when looking through the endless racks of clothes, was how the collection was styled. Layering was a big factor and I loved it. Patchwork was also a strong element and was used beautifully in a variety of colours from soft greys, olives and chartreuse in numerous fur jackets. This experience was one to remember and I am just so happy I got to witness a true fashion legend behind the scenes. Thank you to my lovely and talented friend Annis, who gave me front row pictures from the press box. A rising New York photographer who has brains, talent and beauty. Son Jung Wan 2016 NYFW

February 15, 2016

There is a story behind every women and its never the same, you will never see recurring details and that’s actually what Son Jung Wan achieves in each and every collection she creates. Son Jung Wan’s career has blossomed from a modest boutique, into a household name making her one of the most elite designers in the game. There are so many designers that showcase each season at New York fashion week but there are very few that create the atmosphere and real anticipation that Ms.Wan does. Sophisticated but bold, this collection is not made for the practical lady who loves to blend in. Nothing in the Son Jung Wan’s collection will be missable due to its strong vibrant colors, selection of fine fabrics but most importantly for me the tailoring she creates. All of her creations are tailored for the women who loves to stand out for all the right reasons. This February her new collection was no different, with numerous furs and embellishments, as always I personally fell in love at first sight with her collection. Unlike last February where Ms. Wan used dark purples, green furs and glistening gold fabrics, this year she opted for pastel colours, with grey and black garments added into the mix. Fearless, bold and sophisticated, the Son Jung Wan collection takes risks to the next level. Unfortunately the finale was really quick, so I was unable to get pictures of some pieces but I hope you ladies love the shots I did get. I even got a quick snap of Kevin Tachmen, a fashion genius when it comes to photography working behind the scenes. I really could not pick a favorite and if I did it would be a three hour long essay discussing every small detail of this exquisite and charming collection.

Herve Leger NYFW 2016

February 15, 2016

My very first introduction to fashion week was back in 2013. To this day, I still have the same emotions of pure excitement getting behind the scenes along side fashion weeks elite designers and their teams. No better introduction to fashion week than having my very first show with Herve Leger, an iconic name that has been running for more than three decades. Max and Lubov have created a brand that is adored by so many, from Kim Kardashian to Nicki Minaj. Not only are they extremely successful designers and co founders of Herve Leger but they have also created BCBG. Both brands are tailored to curious and daring ladies, who embrace fashion statements on a daily basis. To call them a “power couple” is a real under statement. Always a media frenzy and this year was no different however there were a few new faces in the mix.

IMG_5879

Last year Taylor Hill along with a few others have walked the Heger Leger show. Taylor has become overnight a super model and most recently walked in this years Victoria Secret’s show. Herve Leger has always been ahead of the game, not only with their collection but also in their selection of models. Most if not all have become household names, which just demonstrates how powerful the Herve Leger brand is. This years winter and fall collections embraced an edgy vibe which is not unusual for Herve Leger. Painted leather laced boots create a punk rock feel with the addition of their infamous body con dress, it was a show not to miss. Even a check skirt was added into the mix to add flair of 90’s punk rock. I personally loved their diverse selection of materials and colors they had this year. From laced chains, to studded fringe although their was a more masculine approach Max and Lubov did also incorporated delicate pieces from dark floral dresses to light greys and creams. For me this show topped all my expectations and just shown that Herve Leger is once again leading the way. I hope you all enjoy my quick snaps of behind the scene madness. Thank you Annis Kamera for the beautiful runway shoots visit her instagram to see more @a.kamera.

Irish Fashion Showcase

September 22, 2015

This is a very exciting time, not only for fashion in New York City but also for fashion designers around the world. Finally the day had arrived that some of my very favorite Irish designers from Fee G to Caroline Matthews, along with many more showcased their designs in this year’s September fashion week. Funnily enough, it could not have been any more of an Irish day, as New York was flooded with torrential rain but this did not stop the excitement surrounding the event. Unfortunately, I arrived a little late due to the weather and leaving Marissa Webbs show but thankfully there was an amazing display after the show with all the designers look books, so I was relieved. Marietta Doran who organized Irish Fashion Showcase, as always held an amazing show that was elegant from start to finish. I was blown away by the selection of designers and how diverse each collection was. I must say for a small country, Ireland once again has demonstrated we are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to fashion design. For me personally, there was one particular designer that really had me at the edge of my seat, no joke. If I were to try to describe her show it would be to “Expect the Unexpected”. You must remember this name Carol Kennelly, she is fast coming a household name, not only in Ireland but worldwide and I will tell you why. Carol Kennelly’s millinery designs are totally inspired from her passion and love for hats and you can see this in her work. Her designs have been worn on “Best Dressed” winners from Melbourne to Tennessee. One piece in particular, which Carol wore on the night, was a beautiful giant rose headpiece that was also featured in the 2015 instillation at Kentucky Derby Museum.

When chatting with Carol back stage about her work and what inspired and motivated her in relation to her designs, she advised at first, she was simply designing for herself, as she felt other hats were only half fulfilling. Some of you may not realize it but in Ireland hats are a “must have” accessory for most social occasions, whether it is a wedding or a trip to the Galway Races. So it wasn’t long before Carol’s friends demanded a signature “Kennelly “design, starting of the fashion business which we see today. Decadent jeweling, intricate pearling, exotic feathers, vintage inspired but with a modern twist makes Carol Kennelly design’s unique from everyone else. You may laugh at me for saying this but you can lose yourself in her designs. For me they have a mystical or dream like feel, which is infectious. I have never been to the Galway races but I do know what designer I will have on speed dial, when I next have a social event. What is all the more lovable about this collection is after having meet Carol, you can see why she has become so successful, she is bubbly with a warm personality, its hard not to want to become her best friend.

Another Irish favorite for me on the night was Jennifer Rothwell, who created a fabulous collection. Her work is inspired by the artwork of Irish artist Harry Clark which is strongly influenced by stained glass windows married with Irish Fairy Folklore mythology. An amazing selection of luxurious fabrics and intricate prints are Jennifer’s forte. Innovative designs with a high quality finish, creates a collection that is unique, yet elegant and timeless. Each garment is created with care, from the inside stitching to the outside print. Jennifer along with Carol both designers have created collections, which are not only loved in Ireland but are fast becoming recognized worldwide. Both ladies have perfectly showcased just some of the talent to be found on our small shores, and its just a little reminder to everyone that we are a fashion force to be reckoned with. Creating timeless designs for the sophisticated woman, The Irish Fashion Showcase will hopefully become a regular feature of New York Fashion Week.
