Self Portrait

March 1, 2016

It seems so long ago since I graduated but what is really nice to know hasn’t changed in that time is how well my Self Portrait dress fits. Deciding on what to wear underneath my graduation robe was a great debate for myself at the time and for my college friends. Will it be bulky ? How will it look in pictures and of course what we all ask is, will I stand out ? “Self Portrait” is easily one of my favourite collections but most particularly for dresses. It will never look bulky because the craftsmanship is second to none and just as good as tailor made. When you take a picture in any Self Portrait dress you can be certain that you are wearing the latest crazed trend or key fashion colour. If you are the girl that does not want to be seen or just wants to blend in, then Self Portrait is not your best option. With Self Portrait you will stand out for all the best possible reasons and truthfully Self Portrait is so far ahead of the rest it will make you look on top of your game. The contrast of black netting and blue underdress is one of my favorite things about this dress. It is elegant and dressy but could still be dressed up or down for a causal day in the city. Just add a pair of boots and a cute leather jacket in the mix and its perfect. The bodice of this dress is not for every one, especially girls who would rather show less cleavage. My solution would be to stitch some fabric in place or wear a bandage top. I wouldn’t let this put you off though and if it does, then it would be very worthwhile searching through their countless other options that will make your heart skip a beat.

San Miguel

February 23, 2016

Well 2016 has got off to a great start, I cannot believe how fast it is going and already we are nearly into March, its insane. Just back myself from Mexico, it was one of the best learning experiences I have had to date as a designer. I moved to San Miguel in January for nearly two months, to work as a costume designer on a local play. It was a very challenging task, as this was the first time I was the “boss” and it was a role I was really excited to take on but also if I am being totally honest was nervous about it. I have never spoken or studied Spanish in school so this was another hurdle to take on (I am not fluent by a long shot but it took me sometime when back in New York to stop saying gracious, so it had some impact lol). For me when you are a guest in a country it is so important to understand and respect their culture, traditions and language. One of the most enjoyable things I love about traveling is being out of your comfort zone.

San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful historical town built in and around clusters of mountains. Most buildings date from the 17th and 18th century and have attracted a growing amount of young Americans and artists. You will constantly find a orchestra playing along with numerous bands or just charming small market stalls selling local hand made toys and clothing in the courtyards. What is special about this location while you are enjoying the culture and local beauty of this small city is the beautiful La Parroquia church from its strategic location is always in your view. I love historical architecture and the beauty it adds to an area and it is something that I believe should always be preserved. One place you must see it the Instituto Allende which holds some of the most breathtaking art work held around a cobbled courtyard. Not far from here you will also find several food markets, you will never taste food as fresh. One go my favorite past times was to explore the city and see the contrast of Mexican doors, it sounds strange but trust me the detail and craftsmanship in these doors are a work of art. Mexicans certainly no how to make an entrance.

There are many small boutique hotels in San Miguel but if I were to advise you on accommodation there would be no better place in my mind than the Rosewood Hotel. Everything about this hotel says San Miguel, draped with local artists textiles and paintings you will never want to leave. Accommodating five exclusive restaurants from traditional Mexican cuisine to a bar that serves 120 different tequilas, where could be better? During the day you can enjoy the surrounding gardens while lounging by the pool. There really is no better hotel located in the center of the city, this hotel really has everything. Whether you stay here or not, you must visit to judge for yourself. I have been to many restaurants around this city but nowhere and I mean nowhere can beat the rooftop view from the Luna bar. It really cannot be described other than pure magical. Throughout the day and night you can enjoy authentic international tapas, while gazing at the iconic La Parroquia, spires, bell towers and Mexican rooftops. Another restaurant that I would advise is Tio Lucas a quant restaurant in comparison to Luna however you wont be disappointed. While eating Tio Lucas cuisine you will be dining in one of the most romantic places I had seen in San Migual. In the main part of the restaurant was a tree holding traditional Mexican star lights every inch of the restaurant was decorated in ornate fabrics and Mexican tiling, it was magical. I had my very first pina colada and ever since then have been hooked.

Mexican clothing is very delicate and lavish and they are not afraid to explore or use vibrant colors which I love. There are many traditional clothing boutiques but for me, I wanted something that has a touch of Mexico but is still wearable elsewhere. That’s why I loved “Recreo”, handmade it has all the elements of traditional garments but still contemporary. Recreo which means recreate, was founded by American designer Charlie Coleman and his family. Featured in Vogue as one of Mexico’s most prominent and elite designers Recreo will not disappoint, tailored for both men and women they use only the world’s finest fabrics. Locally made, you will wonder why you had not heard of this amazing fashion collection sooner. San Miguel really is a city worth visiting whether you’re a history lover, complete foodie or just love to see something different, I would strongly recommend San Miguel as a destination to visit and explore, for myself a place I will never forget!!!

Romwe Romper

February 14, 2016

When we think of summer, we think of rompers, well I do and this particular one I feel you ladies will love. Romwe is an online store that will no doubt have you feeling and looking fabulous for the hot months ahead. I know its hard to think that far away, especially with the winter weather in full swing but I hope these pictures can help you ladies envision summer and start planning ahead. So start now, there is nothing worse then missing out on something special, especially a new piece to add to your summer wardrobe. I can’t wait to wear this in New York this summer, maybe with a cute strappy heel but for now in Mexico’s cobbled streets, flats are my preferred footwear. The balancing act on cobbles is never a fun moment to have and there really is no need for it. Asos always have a good range of footwear, I have been wearing sandals every summer for as long as I can remember. My favorite designs would have to be River Island, who are continually creating fabulous footwear with an extensive selection to choose from. If your not fully convinced then Kurt Geiger surely will. For accessories, one designer I feel you need to keep an eye on every season not just summer is Joie, an amazing American brand that I discovered while living in New York. This flower bag along with many other Joie purchases are one of my favorite pieces for the summer time. Being that its in the midst of winter its nice to think ahead and maybe even plan a trip away to escape this polar vortex that we are having in New York, why wait. Visit www.romwe.com to find some of the most amazing summer pieces.

Little Black Dress

February 10, 2016

Ask any fashionable lady what they love the most in their wardrobe, some may say a winter coat, others may say a vintage hat, but no matter what is their preferred clothing we all have a signature black dress. Black is a color that can do no wrong regardless of how you dress it up. I have several for many different occasions and I could not wait to wear this one wizard sleeve one in Mexico. Wizard sleeves are elegant, cozy and always a good idea. It’s so versatile you can pair it with knee high boots or strappy heel. I’ve picked out a selection of some of my favorite black dresses that can be easily rotated in your wardrobe from causal to formal. The key to having the perfect black dress is good quality fabric, a rule for any purchase. The dress must also have a signature quality that matches your personality. For me, I love my dress to be sexy but sophisticated and with its plunging back it’s the perfect fit.

Where Ever I Go

January 31, 2016

So Mexico has been totally amazing. The atmosphere in San Miguel were I am living is indescribable, it is a small city but really well worth a visit. I feel it is so strange wearing summer clothing in the middle of winter, especially when most of my friends are snowed in back in New York. One of my favorite things to wear in the hot summer months is Kimonos, preferably long, as you can easily change it from a classic long jacket, to a stunning dress with the help of a belt to hold it in place. “Wall flower” vintage in San Francisco is were I purchased this stunning one. You can match it with anything from jeans or a slip, it really is one of my beloved pieces to wear. I have picked out a few similar options which I feel will be perfect for this coming summer. You will definitely  not regret adding this to your wardrobe.
