Self Portrait

March 1, 2016

It seems so long ago since I graduated but what is really nice to know hasn’t changed in that time is how well my Self Portrait dress fits. Deciding on what to wear underneath my graduation robe was a great debate for myself at the time and for my college friends. Will it be bulky ? How will it look in pictures and of course what we all ask is, will I stand out ? “Self Portrait” is easily one of my favourite collections but most particularly for dresses. It will never look bulky because the craftsmanship is second to none and just as good as tailor made. When you take a picture in any Self Portrait dress you can be certain that you are wearing the latest crazed trend or key fashion colour. If you are the girl that does not want to be seen or just wants to blend in, then Self Portrait is not your best option. With Self Portrait you will stand out for all the best possible reasons and truthfully Self Portrait is so far ahead of the rest it will make you look on top of your game. The contrast of black netting and blue underdress is one of my favorite things about this dress. It is elegant and dressy but could still be dressed up or down for a causal day in the city. Just add a pair of boots and a cute leather jacket in the mix and its perfect. The bodice of this dress is not for every one, especially girls who would rather show less cleavage. My solution would be to stitch some fabric in place or wear a bandage top. I wouldn’t let this put you off though and if it does, then it would be very worthwhile searching through their countless other options that will make your heart skip a beat.

Little Black Dress

February 10, 2016

Ask any fashionable lady what they love the most in their wardrobe, some may say a winter coat, others may say a vintage hat, but no matter what is their preferred clothing we all have a signature black dress. Black is a color that can do no wrong regardless of how you dress it up. I have several for many different occasions and I could not wait to wear this one wizard sleeve one in Mexico. Wizard sleeves are elegant, cozy and always a good idea. It’s so versatile you can pair it with knee high boots or strappy heel. I’ve picked out a selection of some of my favorite black dresses that can be easily rotated in your wardrobe from causal to formal. The key to having the perfect black dress is good quality fabric, a rule for any purchase. The dress must also have a signature quality that matches your personality. For me, I love my dress to be sexy but sophisticated and with its plunging back it’s the perfect fit.

RiRi

December 21, 2015

There is always that moment when you find something that is completely out of reach. Most people accept this, while others like myself turn to eBay for several months of the year. We all have questionable habits and I guess this is mine but lucky for me my obsession for this jacket paid-off in the end. You may notice it from a previous owner Rihanna, yep I guess there are times that we can rob style from RiRi’s wardrobe. I found this jacket in a New York boutique for 800dollars, some may think that’s a steal but I agree for all the wrong reasons. No matter who wore it, the quality must be there and you should never pay that kind of money unless it’s real fur. So I walked away but soon regretted it as it tormented me for months. When you’re in this predicament make sure you look at the label to find the designer (that was my BIG mistake). I searched the web non-stop since last xmas and all I got were multiple pictures of Rihanna wearing it yet no designers name attached. To say I was frustrated was an understatement until three weeks ago I nailed it. The designers name that I was searching for endlessly for most of the year was Donny Brook. Donny’s collection of 80s fashion can be found all over the web from Esty to eBay. What was funny about this is that I already have one of his jackets without even knowing. One might see why I love this jacket, as it’s so unusual. If you look closely you will see that the black and white fur is a printed design of a Picasso painting. Whether you feel that this jacket may be too bold for you, don’t be put off there is so many others that you will love. Online vintage shopping has become my new obsession but I do advise you ladies to do as much research as possible into which designer you are buying from. Unfortunately, most vintage boutiques do not do refunds so make sure you are 100% certain you love it before you buy.

Alice & Oliva

December 16, 2015

One of my favorite things to mix and match around this time of year is skirts. Besides being extremely comfortable, they really are the perfect addition to your wardrobe in the winter months. If I had to decide on one designer as a number one choice, it would have to be Alice and Oliva. Each and every season their collection is better than the previous, I wont lie they are pricey but I feel really worth every cent. It will make you feel as though you are one of the girls walking in NYFW, sophisticated and effortlessly chic, for me this is brand you need to invest in. My first summer while working in New York, I bought this beautiful skirt and have never found a replacement that is any way better. You really must check out this seasons collection! Alice and Oliva are known for their lavish prints and textured jackets. If ever there was a moment you wanted to make a statement, these ladies will help you achieve it. One thing that is annoying while wearing a skirt is, what top will complement it and lets face it, you don’t want to make it frumpy looking. My favorite thing to wear with every season is a bodysuit. Once you get one you like you will probably never want to buy a top over jeans again. They are just that good and I’m not the only one to agree with this, with numerous online stores carrying a large selection, it’s a hard one to miss. Asos is always an excellent search option but my ultimate favorite for value and quality is Missguided. Not only do they look amazing but sometimes if not most of the time, you will be spoiled for choice with a great range  of colours. How perfect?? Make sure to keep a close eye on the Alice and Oliva collection, I promise you its all you need to know for what’s trending or “in”, the following season. Photography by Kristen Walker.

Thanksgiving

December 3, 2015

It wasn’t long ago that I remember my mum throwing a poncho on my six year old self. Besides hating it, my rebellion to this wardrobe choice was evident, as I pretended to be a ghost half the time. Luckily for me (but not at the time, lol) ponchos have made a return and I’ve left some of my childish ways behind. There have been numerous designers adding this to their collection this season perhaps influenced by fashionista and New York socialite Oliva Pamlero, who recently rocked a beautiful Burberry Cape last season.

Since then I have noticed them everywhere from vintage boutiques to my everyday addiction Asos, who are now displaying numerous options for the coming season. However, I surprisingly found mine in Topshop, as I usually would be more drawn to their selection of dresses and tops at this time of year. It’s a store I feel has gone from strength to strength in the past five years, having not only branched out Stateside but also opening two stores in the centre of two of Manhattan’s shopping avenues. Lucky for me and other girls from home, we don’t have to wait online any more and hopefully very soon River Island will also make its way here.

There are many others in the Topshop collection but this grey poncho is easily my favorite. The trim is what made it for me and when you put it on you it is really extremely comfortable. This time of year I am usually if not always wearing a black base whether its denim jean or leather pants but that’s not to say that a pair of blue denims would be perfect either. Whether you accessorize this poncho with a belt or chunky necklace it is not essential, as on its own you will turn heads. Trust me you will understand me if you decide to wear it this season.
