Naeem Khan NYFW 2016

February 19, 2016

When we were much younger, we all envisaged ourselves whilst reading fairytales to be a princess, wearing beautiful silk dresses that were endlessly beaded. Naeem Khan an American designer has created this picture however today our fairytale princesses now include Beyonce, Diana Kruger, Carrie Underwood and the First Lady Michelle Obama. It was complete chaos behind the scenes, not only were there over twenty models, the dresses commanded a lot of space, making it a room that is really hard to describe other than pure magical. How production lined up the girls in between eager photographers while still keeping the run of show, seem to be an impossible task but they did it so gracefully. Since 2003 Naeem Khan has created some of the most delicate and intricate embroidery designs and by adding his own signature, Mr. Khan conveys elements of his Indian heritage.

For this particular show, Mr. Khan showcased how talented and diverse he can be as a designer.  With a selection of velvet gowns and vests, Khan used geometric shapes and floral patterns that were far from his usually predictable display of beading. Mixing colors from Violet, black, blue and pink velvets with a small presence of embellishing, it was the perfect opening unlike anything I had seen all week. Front of house before the opening was layered with daring red theatrical curtains and oversized tassels. While everyone was finding their seats the once vibrant red curtains soon turn to grey, layers upon layers were drawn back and Khan was ready to put on a show. Tulle dresses were also present but of course not without Khan signature shimmer. Two in particular stood out for me, the first was a black-layered tall dress with a gold bodice. The other was a bright red layered tulle dress however with this dress, the bodice was laced and delicately beaded onto sheer fabric. Many at the show were from the film and fashion industries and there was also this year’s newly crowned Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach. However for me the star of the show was 11-year-old Trinity Faith Moran, who sadly suffers from rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Trinity walked hand in hand with Mr. Khan, as they walked through the finale with over twenty models. Trinity’s dream was to walk the runway and she did so, effortlessly wearing her custom designed red dress made especially for this big occasion. It truly was a show not to miss but young Trinity stole the show with her infectious smile and elegant walk.

Vera Wang NYFW 2016

February 19, 2016

New York is full of surprises and if you had told me on Friday last when I landed in JFK from Mexico, that I would be given a press pass to Vera Wang, I wouldn’t have believed you. One of the main reasons I love being in this amazing city is you can make anything happen in a day. New York is an opportunity just waiting to happen. There is always a way in this city to grow and network. So this Tuesday, I had the honour of getting to see one of fashion weeks most elite and famous designers Vera Wang. This years collection was simply breathtaking, my favorite part was watching the full production of the show come to life. Models were walking onto the catwalk from every angle, it definitely achieved the element of surprise. With a selection of black gowns , olive greens suits and embellished nude dresses Vera Wang’s collection will be a hard one to out stage. Inspired by the 20’s and 30’s, Vera Wang wanted to convey a collection that represented strong and charismatic young women and she achieved this.

I will admit there was a beautiful tall gown that would be a hard one to carry off for most ladies. If I was to wear it, I think a pair of jeans and an undergarment would be necessary. But then again, fashion is a matter of opinion and that’s just mine. My favourite was a nude tall column gown with a bib neck that was embellished with numerous panels of crystals and metallic sequins. It was a very diverse collection, from bold black suits to dreamy gowns. Vera created a magical show that was strong from the start to finish. One thing that I really adored when looking through the endless racks of clothes, was how the collection was styled. Layering was a big factor and I loved it. Patchwork was also a strong element and was used beautifully in a variety of colours from soft greys, olives and chartreuse in numerous fur jackets. This experience was one to remember and I am just so happy I got to witness a true fashion legend behind the scenes. Thank you to my lovely and talented friend Annis, who gave me front row pictures from the press box. A rising New York photographer who has brains, talent and beauty. More Than Just Fig Leaves

January 1, 2016

New York is renowned for its fashion culture, making it an extremely competitive city to make it as a designer. You need to be strongly driven, ambitious and have a rare or unique talent to stand above the rest. This is actually what owner and founder Eve Emanuel has created with her collection ‘More Than Just Figleaves.’ Before leaving for Ireland I attended the Retail Design Collective event were I met Eve. I met a lot of designers that night but ‘More Than Just Figleaves’ stood out simply for its sophisticated and timeless pieces. Born in London, England Eve has always loved to travel and experience different cultures and this has helped influence her novel approach to design and fashion. The collection itself is based around a beautiful selection of fabrics from vibrant velvet to classic grey suede’s all sourced globally. Eve has taken classic pieces and has added an exciting flair to them, which will not only turn heads but will remain timeless to women who appreciate comfortable elegance. What I personally love about Eve’s collection is that it caters for all women and can be adjusted to achieve their own preferred style. ‘More Than Just Fig Leaves’ is a collection that will easily evolve in your wardrobe for years to come and is perfect for mix and matching.

I picked two of my favorites for you ladies to view. My first was this beautiful black and white ‘polka dot’ skirt. Midi skirts are something every women should have in her life. I have a variety of my own and what is perfect about this particular skirt is that it focuses on creating the most elegant silhouette no matter what your shape or size. Whether you are going to a wedding or just wanting to rock it with a leather jacket, no matter what the occasion is, you will find every reason to wear this skirt. My favorite part of it is the polka dot pattern, its just fun and flirty.

My second choice was Eve’s stunning grey suede blazer jacket with a gold collar. I fell in love with this jacket the moment I saw it. To begin with, for me there are too many attractive elements to accurately describe this jacket but if I were to sum it up in one word it would be perfection. It really does not matter how you decide to style this piece, what really does matter is, try not to wear it every day ! Judge for yourself. Trust me, the minute you put this beauty on you will never want to take it off. Visit www.morethanjustfigleaves.com or click on pictures for link.Photography by Annis Kamara instagram @a.kamera

Gabrielson Beige

September 6, 2015

The change of seasons can be very exciting and beautiful at this time of year and the Autumn or Fall has got to my favourite in the city. Not only is the weather more beautiful but also there is an excitement and real buzz among all fashion lovers for the week of fashion in NYC with the introduction of new collections and designers. Autumn/Winter time for dressing up has got to be my favorite, I love to layer up and feel cozy. The only negative to this time of year is that dresses really aren’t the most practical option for a night out. That’s until I discovered a New York designer called Lauren Gabrielson. Driven by her appreciation for timeless style and passion for designing pieces that women want to wear, this is one designer you really need to take note of. Lauren started her professional career in the fashion industry working with Ginny Hilfiger on her brand, Ginny H. While working in New York , she recognized the industry’s tendency to outsource production overseas, which sometimes resulted in products that often lacked quality and originality of design. Inspired to produce locally made clothing, Lauren began producing pieces of her own. After seeing much success with her colorful, uniquely-detailed and effortless designs, Lauren opened her first store in Sag Harbor, New York for the Summer of 2010 and her brick and mortar flagship in Nolita, NYC in 2011. Each collection is made in her Brooklyn based factory, where she oversees each piece that is made. Known for offering a fresh take on classic designs, Lauren allows women to create a style that is truly their own, with a dynamic array of colors and styles. I have to admit wearing jersey dresses wouldn’t be my first choice of dress to pick while shopping. The minute I tried this dress on however I knew I would have missed out with my theory. I am now a new lover of the jersey dress and truth be told, I have never felt more sophisticated and elegant. For me comfort is important but that can be achieved in many ways. If I feel as though I’m wearing a dress or trousers that ultimately draws focus to my less than favorite spots, I immediately want to change. Whats my least favorite?? At the minute it has to be my hips and waist, so why wear a jersey body-con dress? Jersey dresses are known to show every inch but with this particular dress I’ve never felt so confident. Tailoring a jersey dress seems to be a challenge for most designers however not for Lauren. With the clever use of pleats and corseted fabric carried down the waist line, she has designed a dress that is sophisticated and sexy but also extremely comfortable. For my accessories, I did not want to go crazy with color, as I find beige and creams are beautiful on their own and can be easily ruined by deep vibrant colors. That’s only my personal opinion. Lucky for me, I found this beautiful clutch bag from Aldo shoes which are fast becoming my favorite collection this season for bags. Not forgetting my bracelet, I will forever remain loyal to my Jcrew jewelry and found this piece at a sample sale this year which is something I do advise to keep a watch out for between seasons. I hope you love this look as much as I do. Lauren designs can be found online, in exclusive pop-up locations around New York and the Hamptons as well and in Luxury resort wear boutiques nationwide. So don’t miss out.
